8th Graders Place 3rd at GACS Math Tournament Shiloh's 8th grade Algebra 1 Team placed third in team competition at the 19th Annual Dwight Love Memorial Math Tournament, held March 17, 2007 at Greater Atlanta Christian School in Lilburn. The team score combines the top four written contest scores with the teams ciphering scores. Our top individual scorer was Mashfik A., with 55 points, followed by Chris P., Mason C., Brian L., Omar G., Leticia S. and Jordan J. They were beaten by math powerhouse Pizitz Middle School from Alabama and Richard Hull Middle School here in Gwinnett County. The 6th and 7th grade Pre-Algebra team placed 5th. The top individual competitors were 7th grader Fernando M. and 6th grader Kevin E., with 40 points each, followed by Sir G., Taylor H., Kyle H., Javier P. and Ciara D. Pizitz Middle also took top team honors in Pre-Algebra. Competitions Shiloh Middle Schoolers compete in academic competitions in all subject areas. Some of this year's winners are listed below. Math Counts '07 Winners More than 100 Shiloh students participated in the three-part Math Counts competition during January. Placing first, with 30 individual points, was Brian L., followed by Mason C., Mashfik A. and Siobhanna B. These four eighth graders will represent Shiloh at the Metro Atlanta Math Counts competition at Georgia Tech on February 17. Madison W. was the first place finisher in 7th grade, and 5th place overall finisher. The other top seventh graders are Fernando M., John D. and Evan M. Vocabulary Bee Shiloh students recently participated in an online Vocabulary Bee. Brian L. was the eighth grade winner, Austin P. won the seventh grade competition and Steven S. was the 6th grade champion. All three of these young men have qualified for the state competition to be held on March 19. Champion Spellers Each homeroom held a class spelling bee, with the winners moving on to compete at the school level. This year's champion spellers are Sam R. and Kaneisha P. Math Contests Sigma

Science Fair Shiloh Middle held it's first Science Fair in many years in January, with all of Mrs. Martin's Gifted Science students participating, as well as members of the Science Club, sponsored by Mr. Joyner and Ms. Howell. The most outstanding projects will move on to compete at the Gwinnett County Science Fair. Academic Bowl The Academic "Quiz Bowl" team competes in tournaments with other middle school students, including a tournament hosted here at Shiloh. These 6th, 7th and 8th graders answer questions that cover the facts in all academic subjects. They also use their critical thinking skills to apply their knowledge in higher order questions. The team, coached by Mr. Mike Dumler and Mr. Max Brown, practices three afternoons each week and competes on Saturdays in Atlanta, Gwinnett, Macon, and in the Georgia Academic Team Association events. Shiloh Signatures Literary Competition Shiloh Signatures is the new name for our schools literary competition. Students in all grade levels can enter their written work in various categories, including fiction, response to literature and writing to explain. |
