What's Happening in our Gifted Classrooms - Grade 8

Earthquakes and Volcanos

8th grade gifted science students studied volcanos and earthquakes with some hands-on projects. Their first task was to create an earthquake- proof structure, made of spaghetti and marshmallows, 20 cm or taller and capable of supporting an egg at this height while placed on an earthquake-simulating shaking table. Several students had success in their architectural design.

The second task was to create a volcano amusement park. Students created a map and a brochure to show their amusement park plans. Some of the ideas that students came up with included silica shakes, pahoehoe and aa waterslides, ash/cinders/bombs ball pits, and hot spring wave pools.

8th Grade Math Projects

Each of Mrs. Traylor's Algebra students chose a math topic that interested them, ranging from zero to infinity, and created a presentation on that topic. Some created PowerPoints, some did written reports and a few created web sites. Here are links to a few. They are best viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Tanvi researched the history of trigonometry
Chris studied infinity
Brian found imaginary numbers fascinating
Ryan explained division with animation
Josh compared two 18th century mathematicians
Leticia was intrigued by the Four Color Theorem
Raheem found "nothing at all" interesting (ie, zero)

They have also been using Geometer's Sketchpad software to graph functions, and put those graphs into PowerPoint presentations.

Good Writing is Critical in 8th Grade: Georgia Writing Test is in January

In Ms. Espana's Language Arts classes, the first nine weeks will concentrate on Modeling Daily Grammar Practice, Poetry and Writing units, with continued emphasis on correct grammar, usage, mechanics and spelling.

Mrs. Lindsay's classes will be exploring writing by using themselves as the topic to discover. Through poetry, personal narrative, and persuasive writing, they will express their own thoughts, beliefs and experiences.

A novel study and short story unit will also be included in this personal experience unit.

Josh tries to figure out how the hand controls in FDR's automobile were designed at the Warm Springs museum.
